Anett Kontaveit and Shuai Zhang meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Wuhan Open.
Anett Kontaveit is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekic that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Kontaveit won 57 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit won 60 percent of her total service points and produced six breaks on seven break points. Kontaveit has put together some impressive victories against some strong competition, which was much needed considering she entered this tournament losing four of her last six matches. If Kontaveit continues to return the way she has lately, she has a chance for an even deeper run. Kontaveit has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since the French Open. Kontaveit has split her last six matches on hard court.

Shuai Zhang is coming off a straight sets win over Polona Hercog that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Zhang won 63 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Zhang won 52 percent of her total service points and converted on eight of her 16 break points. Zhang obviously has to be better with her serve, but her return has been on fire recently, and it’s helped her win 10 of her last 12 sets. Zhang has produced 12 breaks in this tournament alone and has produced 21 break points in her last four sets. If Zhang can even be decent with her serve, she has a serious chance to push for a title in this tournament. Zhang hopes to win three matches in a single tournament back-to-back tries. Zhang has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in Vancouver of 2015, a match Kontaveit won in three sets. The match took 26 games to be decided.
As hot as Zhang has been lately, I have to side with Kontaveit to win this match given the difference in serve. Zhang is giving her opponent way too many break points and an above-average player in Kontaveit will make her pay. You can’t give away double-digit break points and not expect it to catch up to you eventually.
Kontaveit wins a competitive match to make the quarterfinals.
