Angelique Kerber vs. Madison Keys

Madison Keys and Angelique Kerber meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Wuhan Open.

Angelique Kerber will play her first match since being bounced in the third round of the US Open. The last time we saw Kerber, she had 25 unforced errors and won just 52 percent of her total service points. Inconsistent play has been an issue for Kerber since becoming one of the top ranked players in the world, and she’s played just six matches since winning the Wimbledon. Kerber didn’t serve to her ability in any of her US Open matches and had far more unforced errors than we’re used to seeing. The one positive for Kerber is that she’s still one of the top competitors in the game and five of her last six losses have gone three sets. Win or lose, Kerber isn’t going down without a fight. Kerber has split her last six matches on hard court.

Madison Keys vs. Angelique Kerber 2018 Wuhan Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets win over Yafan Wang that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Keys won 76 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Keys won 69 percent of her total service points and saved both of her break points. It was a very clean and impressive performance from Keys, who played her first match since making the semifinals of the US Open. Of course, it’s always about the unforced errors with Keys. If the American is hitting the ball with great pace while keeping the ball in play, she can beat anybody and is a threat to win this tournament. Keys has 10 wins over top-10 players since 2016, two of which have come this year. Keys has won nine of her last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have played nine times and Kerber has won seven of those matches. The most recent meeting was in Cincinnati of this year, a match Keys won in three sets. This will be the third meeting this year between Keys and Kerber. Three of the nine matches have gone the distance.

It’s hard to trust Kerber in her current form, as she’s not serving well and hasn’t played a lot lately. Keys is the type of player who can bury you quickly with her power, and she’s improved her return a lot this season.

Given that Keys has a match under her belt and was very sharp with her serve, I’ll side with the American. I’m not sure what to make of Kerber right now.
