Gael Monfils vs. Fernando Verdasco
The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Fernando Verdasco and Gael Monfils meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Vienna Open.
Fernando Verdasco is coming off a three sets win over Kyle Edmund that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Verdasco won 74 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Verdasco won 65 percent of his total service points and saved five of his seven break points. Verdasco has really had to dig deep to get to this point in the tournament and five of his last seven matches have been decided in three sets. If Verdasco can be more consistent with his second serve, he’d make this matches a lot easier and prevent the wear and tear he’s picked up over the last few weeks. Verdasco has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the second time since the German Open back in July. Verdasco has won three of his last four matches on indoor hard court.

Gael Monfils is coming off a straight sets win over John Isner that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Monfils won 83 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Monfils won 75 percent of his total service points and saved his only break point. Monfils got 74 percent of his first serves in play and hit 10 aces in a victory that took a little over an hour. Monfils hs hit 28 aces in his first two matches and has been dominant with his first serve, which is key for him to make a title run in this tournament. Monfils has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the third time in his last six tries. Monfils has won six of his last seven matches on indoor hard court.
These two have played five times and Monfils has won three of those matches. The most recent match was in Beijing of this year, a match Verdasco won in three sets. Three of the last four matches between these two players were decided in three sets.
If Monfils is going to continue dominating his first serve and get so many free points, he’s going to win this match. While Verdasco has the shotmaking skills to counter whatever Monfils throws at him and owns the h2h, he’s made life tough for him due to a subpar second serve and has had to play a lot of three set matches.
I like Monfils to get the job done here and advance to the semifinals.
