Taylor Fritz and Marius Copil meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Swiss Indoors.

Taylor Fritz is coming off a straight sets win over Henri Laaksonen that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Fritz won 74 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Fritz won 67 percent of his total service points and produced four breaks on 12 break points. As long as Fritz takes care of his first serve and limits the break points, he’s got a chance to the surprise of this tournament that has a pretty solid field this year. Fritz has now won nine straight matches when he’s listed as the favorite. Fritz has won all four sets this tournament and has a chance to win three matches in a single event for the first time since the Chengdu Open. Fritz has split his last four matches on indoor hard court.

Taylor Fritz vs. Marius Copil 2018 Swiss Indoors Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Marius Copil is coming off a straight sets win over Marin Cilic that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Copil won 90 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Copil won 76 percent of his total service points, dropped just four of 39 first serve points and produced 21 aces. Beating a top-10 player in a fairly big tournament has to be one of the bigger wins for Copil in his career, and he’s now racked up 31 aces in his last two matches. This has kind of come out of nowhere considering Copil entered qualifying losing six of his last eight matches, but after his recent performance, there’s no overlooking the 28-year-old now. Copil has won four straight matches on indoor hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Fritz is the higher ranked player, but Copil has been the better player through his two matches and just controlled a straight sets match against a top-10 player in the world. Copil is bombing his serve and getting so many free points, which is key in a match that many would consider close to a coin flip.

Neither of these players have been the most consistent over the past few months, but given his serve, I’m backing Copil to reach the semifinals.
