Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Swiss Indoors.

Roger Federer is coming off a three sets win over Gilles Simon that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 71 percent of his first serve points and 44 percent of his second serve points. Federer won 60 percent of his total service points and produced five breaks on 10 break points. Federer continues to miss his spots more than usual and hasn’t served great in any of his three matches, but like Federer usually does, he continues to dig deep and find ways to win, even if it’s ugly. Federer has made the final of the Swiss Indoors 13 times, and the home crowd isn’t going to let him go out that easily. So, while there’s clear holes in Federer’s game currently, it’s very tough to bet against him in this tournament given the history. Federer hopes to make his seventh final appearance of the year and the 151st final appearance of his career. Federer has won 15 straight matches on indoor hard court.

Daniil Medvedev is coming off a three sets win over Stefanos Tsitsipas that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Medvedev won 85 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Medvedev won 71 percent of his total service points and saved three of his four break points. Medvedev has now won 11 of his last 14 sets, and while he could do a better job of getting his first serves in play, he’s been lights out with his serve for the most part, being broken one or less times in four of his last five victories. Medvedev has to keep that up in order to have a chance in this contest. Medvedev has one career win over a top-10 player, which came in last years Wimbledon. Medvedev hopes to make his fourth final appearance of the year and his fifth final appearance of his career. Medvedev has won five of his last six matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played once, which was in Shanghai of this year, a match Federer won in three sets. The match took 30 games to be decided.

Medvedev pushed Federer to the limit when they met a couple of weeks ago, and he has a shot here based on the way Roger has struggled. However, if you’re going to pick a player who has one career win over a top-10 player, to beat somebody who has dominated this tournament over the last decade, well, there’s not much I can do for you. Even with his struggles, you don’t pick against Federer in the Swiss Indoors.

Federer makes the final of this tournament yet again.
