TV: Tennis

Alexander Zverev and Frances Tiafoe meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Paris Masters.

Alexander Zverev is coming off a semifinal appearance in Basel and has won six of his last eight matches overall. Zverev has had real issues with his second serve in his last two matches, and he just had eight double faults the last time we saw him play. Zverev for most of the year has been one of the top players in the world and is capable of winning a tournament this big, but other times he’s looked like he’s run into the proverbial wall. It usually doesn’t take long to figure out which Zverev you’re going to get. The good news is Zverev has done a wonderful job of playing his best the bigger the tournament, so he should be a tough out over this next week. Zverev has won six of his last nine matches on indoor hard court.

Alexander Zverev vs. Frances Tiafoe 2018 Paris Masters Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Frances Tiafoe is coming off a straight sets win over Nicolas Mahut that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Tiafoe won 85 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Tiafoe won 77 percent of his total service points and saved his only break point in the victory. Tiafoe entered this tournament on a four-match losing streak, so serving well and getting a win in less than an hour and a half has to help the confidence. It’s now about consistency for the young Tiafoe, as he’s really struggled the last couple of months to say the least. Tiafoe looks to wi two matches in a single tournament for the first time since Toronto. Tiafoe has lost three of his last four matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played three times and Zverev has won two of those matches. The most recent meeting was in Cincinnati of 2017, a match Tiafoe won in three sets. The previous two matches were in grand slams, matches Zverev won in three sets.

Tiafoe is quite talented and has the game and shotmaking skills to beat Zverev on this stage. The problem is Tiafoe is still finding himself as a player and learning how to put together winning performance after winning performance. Zverev has already figured that out and usually shows up.

So, while Tiafoe is always a live dog, Zverev is the safer and wise bet here.
