Jack Sock and Dominic Thiem meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Paris Masters.

Jack Sock is coming off a straight sets win over Malek Jaziri that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Sock won 88 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Sock won 78 percent of his total service points and didn’t face a single break point in a victory that took less than an hour. Sock is easily enjoying his best success of the year right now, as he’s won all four sets this tournament and has yet to be broken. Sock obviously has the ability to play this way for longer stretches, but he inconsistency is a major issue and it’s hard to trust somebody who has lost 15 of their last 20 matches. Sock has a chance to win three matches for the first time since last years Paris Masters. Sock has split his last six matches on indoor hard court.

Jack Sock vs. Dominic Thiem 2018 Paris Masters Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Dominic Thiem is coming off a three sets win over Borna Coric that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 77 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Thiem won 69 percent of his total service points and produced five breaks on nine break points. Despite getting just 49 percent of his first serve points in play, Thiem hit 14 aces and lost just 10 of 43 first serve points. Thiem is capable of taking his game to another level, but he’s going to be a handful as long as that serve continues to hold form. Thiem has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the third time since the US Open. Thiem has won eight of his last nine matches on indoor hard court.

These two have split their previous four matches. The most recent match was in the 2016 Paris Masters, a match Sock won in straight sets. Thiem has won two of the three meetings against Sock on hard court. Two of the four matches have gone the distance.

Sock is talented enough to win this match, but it’s well documented just how awful his year has been, and two wins don’t make you forget about the countless losses. Thiem has been highly consistent since his US Open run and is playing with far more confidence and a more reliable serve.

I have no choice but to side with Thiem, as backing Sock against top tier players isn’t an option based on his results all year.
