Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe meet in the 2018 tennis Next Gen ATP Finals.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is coming off a four sets win over Jaume Munar that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Tsitsipas won 78 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Tsitsipas won 69 percent of his total service points and produced two breaks on eight break points. Tsitsipas was consistent with his serve the way he’s been much of the year, and he really upped his level of focus in the tiebreaks. As long as Tsitsipas continues to play with a sense of urgency and doesn’t lose concentration, you can make a strong argument that he should be favored to win this tournament. Tsitsipas has won six of his last eight matches on indoor hard court.

Frances Tiafoe is coming off a four sets win over Hubert Hurkacz that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Tiafoe won 74 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Tiafoe won 72 percent of his total service points and saved six of his seven break points. Tiafoe didn’t look like the same player who entered this tournament losing five of his last six matches, and his serve was working to the point he had 11 aces. We know the type of player Tiafoe can be, but it’s a matter of consistency at this point. Tiafoe hasn’t won back-to-back matches since Toronto and has had issues with unforced errors. Tiafoe has lost four of his last six matches on indoor hard court.
These two have played once, which was in Tokyo of 2017, a match Tsitsipas won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to be decided.
I said in my previous write up that Tiafoe is capable of winning this tournament and is a strong dark horse. That doesn’t mean I’m going to ride Tiafoe in every match. He needs to show consistency. Tsitsipas has shown he can rise to the occasion and has been one of the more trustworthy players over the last couple of months.
This match could very well go the distance, but Tsitsipas has the edge.
