Kevin Anderson and Novak Djokovic meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis ATP Finals.

Kevin Anderson is coming off a straight sets loss over Roger Federer that took 19 games to decide. In the loss, Anderson won 73 percent of his first serve points and 32 percent of his second serve points. Anderson won 55 percent of his total service points and was broken four times on six break points. Anderson has served at a high level for the most part these part couple of months, but in his recent losses, it’s been his second serve that’s let him down. A higher first serve in play percentage makes Anderson is a much more dangerous player. Anderson now hopes to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since this years French Open and London. Anderson also has a shot at his sixth final appearance of the year and his 19th final appearance of his career. Anderson has won 10 of his last 13 matches on indoor hard court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Marin Cilic that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 90 percent of his first serve points and 91 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 91 percent of his totals service points and didn’t face a single break point in the victory. Djokovic won 28 of his 31 service points and had just 12 unforced errors. At this point you just have to give it up to Djokovic, as he’s playing clean, superb tennis and is making some of the better players in the world look foolish. There’s really not much else to say at this point. Djokovic hopes to make his seventh final appearance of the year and his 105th final appearance of his career. Djokovic has won seven of his last eight matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played nine times and Djokovic has won seven of those matches. The most recent meeting was in Shanghai of this year, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. Anderson’s only wins over Djokovic came in this years Laver Cup and the 2008 Miami Open. Six of the last eight meetings have been decided in straight sets.

I said from the start of this tournament that Djokovic was head and shoulders the favorite to win, and he’s done nothing to change my mind. There’s also glaring h2h history between Djokovic and Anderson, and Novak had little trouble in the most recent match.

I’ll take Djokovic in straight sets.
