Gael Monfils meets fellow Frenchman, Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Dubai Open. Which Frenchman will book their spot in the semifinals?
Richard Gasquet beat fellow Frenchman, Benoit Paire, in straight sets 6-4/6-4 to book his spot in the quarterfinals. Gasquet has been trying to find his form since mid 2019 after he came back on the tour after his back surgery. Gasquet had so much potential and hype around him many moons ago, but injuries and too much pressure have made it hard for the frenchman to every reach his potential. Gasquet, when in form, plays incredibly well. Gasquet has an amazing one-handed backhand and he is so flamboyant that he is able to confuse opponents.
Gael Monfils came through his second-round match with incredible ease against Uchiyama, beating the Japanese player 6-1/6-2. Monfils has been playing increasingly well in the last few years and this is because of the development of his mentality. Monfils used to not care about winning or losing, but rather entertaining the crowd. Monfils has now doubled down on himself and focused on using both aspects of winning and entertaining as his brand. Monfils is incredible talented, he runs down every ball and he is so defensive that his opponents tend to overplay and make mistakes.
This will be the 18th meeting between both players, with Monfils leading the H2H 10-7. Monfils has won 3 of their last 4 encounters as he has been very solid in the last few years. What interests me in this match is how close all of their prior encounters have been. 10 of their 17 encounters have had both players winning a set. This match has all the ingredients to be a long and gruelling match, but at the end of the day, Monfils is in better form.
Gael Monfils to win.
