Richard Gasquet vs. Dominic Thiem - 2020 Ultimate Tennis Showdown
Saturday, June 20 2020
Dominic Thiem is traveling all over the place in recent weeks, playing in the Austrian Pro Series, then going to Belgrade to play in the Adria Tour, then back to the Austrian Pro Series, and know here at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown. Thiem will meet Richard Gasquet in his first match here at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in what should be an epic battle.
Dominic Thiem just keeps getting better and better in his form after having struggled a bit in the early weeks of the Austrian Pro Series. Thiem went to the Adria Tour and went 4-0, beating the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Filip Krajinovic. Dominic Thiem has only played on clay since the return of exhibition tournaments and he will have to get used to the different pace here on the hard courts at the Mouratoglou Academy. Thiem will be looking to be perfect in his first weekend here as he is going to be playing catchup with players who have already played 2 matches.
Richard Gasquet was great on the first weekend of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, beating David Goffin in his first match, and losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in an extremely close encounter in his second match. Gasquet looks to be back to full form and he will only keep improving with the more minutes he spends on the court. Gasquet is one of the more fun players to watch and he always makes sure to entertain in his playing style. Will Gasquet be able to provide an upset by beating a perhaps tired Thiem?
This is going to be the fourth meeting between both players, with Gasquet leading the head to head 2-1. Gasquet beat Thiem in 2015 and 2017 in tight matches, however, last year in Beijing Thiem absolutely destroyed the Frenchman. Thiem is, of course, the better player, however, this is going to be his first match here and his first match on a hard court in quite some time. Thiem will win this match, but it will be a tight one. I see this being split 2-2 with Thiem winning it in a sudden death tiebreak.
Dominic Thiem to win.
