Anastasija Sevastova vs. Coco Gauff – 8/31/20 US Open Tennis Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-08-31 11:00:00 EDT

Coco Gauff and Anastasija Sevastova meet in the first round of the 2020 tennis US Open.

Coco Gauff lost her first match in Cincinnati to Maria Sakkari in 16 games, and she’s 3-2 in matches this month overall after making the semifinals in Lexington. Gauff has played five matches overall since playing the Australian Open back in January, but she’s been on the losing side in each of her last four sets. Gauff is coming off a match where she won 53 percent of her total service points and was broken four times. Gauff has to do a better job of getting her first serve in play if she’s going to make another deep grand slam run, which she’s done now three times at just 16 years old. Gauff is 3-0 for her career in grand slam first round matches. Gauff has won six of her last nine matches on hard court.

Anastasija Sevastova also lost her opening match in Cincinnati, and she’s been on the losing side in her last three matches overall when you throw in an exhibition. Sevastova has played a lot of exhibition tennis over the last month, so she should be in decent form in terms of rustiness. However, Sevastova is coming off a match where she won 52 percent of her total service points and was broken five times. Sevastova has lost in the first round of a grand slam three times since 2018, including in this years Australian Open. However, Sevastova has a 71 percent winning percentage at the US Open and hasn’t lost in the first round here since 2011. Sevastova has split her last six matches on hard court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

On paper this is a tough match for CoCo, as Sevastova is an experienced player with a balanced game, she has several top-10 wins and plays her best grand slam tennis at the US Open, which includes three quarterfinal trips. Sevastova probably should be favored here. With that said, Gauff seems to play her best tennis on the biggest stages and she has the athleticism and speed to counter the slices and drop shots Sevastova likes to mix in her game. Sevastova is also coming off a match where she didn’t serve well.

I’ll side with Gauff in this first round match.
