David Goffin meets Filip Krajinovic in the third round of the 2020 US Open on Friday, September 3rd 2020. Will Krajinovic continue on his superb run of form, or will Goffin use his experience and skillset to continue his US Open campaign?
Filip Krajinovic has been extremely solid here at the US Open, especially in his second round victory over Marcus Giron. Krajinovic gave it his all on every point from the start and took this match with ease in straight sets. Krajinovic loves these fast courts here in New York and he is able to use his precise shot making ability to push opponents around the court. Remember that just last week, Krajinovic destroyed Dominic Thiem in straight sets in the Cincinnati Masters. If Krajinovic continues to play extremely solid and potentially improves his game, he could be a wildcard here and shock us all by going very deep.
David Goffin has also been very solid and persistent here at the US Open, beating two big servers in Reilly Opelka and Lloyd Harris. Goffin is one of the best returners in the game, and in his match against Lloyd Harris in the second round he showed us that he can chip return big servers to get the ball back in play and beat them in long baseline rallies. Goffin is one of the more consistent players on the tour, and he will have the experience and knowledge to push far in this US Open, especially with Nadal and Federer not playing.
This will be the fourth meeting between these two players, with Krajinovic leading the head to head 2-1. They met twice last year, with Krajinovic taking both of those matches with ease. Goffin was struggling in that first half of the year last year but he got back to the levels we know he can play at towards the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. This is going to be a tight match between Goffin who can keep returning without issues, and Krajinovic who can pick a spot on the court and hit winners. I think Goffin gets his revenge on those two defeats last year, but it will be a very tight match. Take Goffin to win in 5 sets.
