Marin Cilic meets Alexander Bublik in the first round of the 2020 Rome Masters on Monday, September 14th 2020. Will Cilic come in and play the same way he did at the US Open, or will Bublik shock us all?
Alexander Bublik has been a shocking player as of recent, just giving up on easy points in matches and not really caring of winning. Bublik has so much potential and so much talent when he wants to give it his all and it is shocking that he does not enjoy playing tennis and only sees it as a job to make money. Bublik is a hard player to predict for or against because you never know if he is going to show up to play or to mess around and get a check. Bublik is on a very long losing streak and it will be interesting to see how he comes out on Monday.
Marin Cilic had a solid US Open, where he reached the third round although being 2 sets and a break down in the first round against Denis Kudla. Cilic improved throughout the tournament, but of course could not keep up with the eventual champion, Dominic Thiem, in the third round. Cilic is a former Grand Slam champion and knows he can go far here in Rome, especially playing a guy like Alexander Bublik in the first round. Cilic has a massive serve and a superb forehand, and if those are firing, it is hard for many players to stop him.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players and it could be either a tight match or an absolute destruction by Marin Cilic. If Bublik comes out to play and gives it his all, I can see this being a tight 3-setter, but if not Cilic will run away in straight sets. Either way though I see Cilic winning. Cilic benefitted from the coronavirus outbreak by getting his body back to 100% and he will be in the mood to get his career and ranking back on track after a couple tough years.
