Gael Monfils looks to bounce back after a tough loss at the Rome Masters to Dominik Koepfer as he now meets another German in Yannick Hanfmann in the first round of the 2020 Hamburg Open on Tuesday, September 22nd 2020. Will Monfils get back on track, or will another upset be on the cards?

Yannick Hanfmann is a solid player on clay and he usually pops around more in this time prior to Roland Garros on the clay court tournament schedule. Hanfmann will have seen how his German compatriot, Dominik Koepfer, beat Gael Monfils last week in Rome and he will definitely be eyeing causing an upset here in Hamburg. However, will he be able to against Monfils who will now have taken more time to get his game up to speed here in the clay courts of Hamburg. Hanfmann will have to give it his all if thats the case and he will have to hope Monfils has another bad day.

Gael Monfils looked to be the favourite against Dominik Koepfer last week in Rome, but his game was not ready to compete on clay after such a long break. Monfils, however, has definitely been training hard over the last week to ensure another upset is not on the cards here. Monfils has so much experience and his athleticism is a beautiful thing to watch in a match. Monfils has been on top of his game in recent years and I hope he brings his A-game here in Hamburg and in Paris next week.

This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and although the odds are quite even on both sides, this should be a Gael Monfils bounce back win. Monfils needs to get more matches under his belt and he will definitely give it his all to prevent another upset. Monfils will have been practicing hard to get himself on top level for his match on Tuesday and I expect this to be over in two sets. Hanfmann will of course be confident in his ability to cause an upset, but I am more confident in Monfils’ ability to get the job done.
