The 8th seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils takes on Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in what is sure to be one of the more entertaining matches of the first round at Roland Garros. Both of this guys are supremely talented, and love to entertain with their unique and flashy styles. Will the experienced Frenchman overcome his recent struggles and be able to get past the young talent?
Monfils comes into the French Open on the heels of two surprising first round losses in Rome and Hamburg to less fancied opponents. Rust was definitely an issue with him as he hadn't played a tournament since Dubai in February. Monfils is one of the most popular players on tour and possesses a unique blend of speed, defense, shotmaking and power that is sure to make his opponent uncomfortable. He enjoys playing at home and should be experienced enough to be ready for this match despite his recent poor form. He's been a semifinalist here in Paris before and will be looking to repeat that achievement.
On the other hand, Bublik has been in mixed form recently. First round losses in New York, Kitzbuhel and Rome were followed by a fantastic run in Hamburg, where he reached the Quarterfinals, taking out Felix Auger-Aliassime in the process. He is also an entertainer, combining trick shots with a huge serve and forehand, regularly unsettling his opponents. However he is known to lose focus very often, and in a grand slam against a top ranked opponent that could spell trouble. If Bublik can keep it together for the whole match he is talented enough to spring the upset.
I expect Monfils to be ready for this match, having shaken off his rust. He is too experienced to let Bublik's antics trouble him too much and is likely to have the Kazakh on the back foot from early. It is hard to discount Bublik knowing what he is capable of but he has never shown that he has the capability to focus for an entire tournament, let alone a five set match. Bublik is definitely the more in form player having taken top clay player Christian Garin to three sets in Hamburg a week ago but it is difficult to look past Monfils here. Monfils should get through a potentially tricky first rounder in four sets. Monfils to win.
