Johanna Konta meets Cori Gauff in the first round of the 2020 French Open on Sunday, September 27th 2020. Will Gauff be able to cause an upset here against a much more experienced and skilled player, especially on clay, or will Konta give the youngster a lesson in experience?
Johanna Konta has been in top form since the return of the tour and she will be filled with confidence. Konta has struggled over the last few years due to injuries and form issues, however, the break in the tour this year due to the coronavirus has allowed her to get her body back at 100% and ensure her game is on top form coming into tournaments. Konta is extremely experienced and she is very determined to show the WTA tour that she is still here and that she is not to be underestimated. I expect a very tough Konta to beat here in Paris.
Cori Gauff is the future of the women's tennis world and I am sure she will put up a strong fight here against Konta in Paris, however, I see her more gaining experience here rather than going far. These are still early days in her career, and therefore she does not have as much experience I would expect her to have on clay compared to Konta. Last week Gauff took the fight to Garbina Muguruza at the Rome Masters, however, one aspect of her game held her back, the double faults. If Gauff is to compete here, she needs to sort out her serve.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players and it is going to be an extremely tight encounter. I expect both players to give it their all and want to make it to the second round so bad. However, there can only be one winner, and if I have to choose, I need to choose experience. Konta has been in superb form since the restart, and although Gauff has too, Gauff has more issues in her game at the moment, such as the double faults, which will prevent her from winning this match.
