Alja Tomljanovic is a very solid tennis player in the women’s game, however, I feel she has not had her breakthrough moment yet, or breakthrough performance. Tomljanovic needs to continue to expand her game and gain more experience against the best players out there and prove to us that she is going to be one of the best in the game. Alja has a lot of potential and it would be great to see her win some big matches, and in the next few months I am sure she will. Tomljanovic now faces a really tough opponent in her first round match in Maria Sakkari. If Alja is going to come through this encounter she needs to ensure she brings her A-game.

Maria Sakkari has been superb since the return of tennis, especially in the Cincinnati Masters and at the US Open. At the Cincinnati Masters, Sakkari was able to beat Serena Williams convincingly and showed us all that she is not to be underestimated in the women’s game. Sakkari has a powerful forehand and she is able to play long and drawn out rallies, causing her opponents to become impatient and begin to hit errors. I think Sakkari will be one of the top women’s players in the next couple of years, she just needs to find that consistency in her game.

This is going to be the second meeting between these two players, with Maria Sakkari leading the head to head 1-0. I think Tomljanovic is not ready for this match as she has not had as much preparation as Sakkari has in the last few weeks and she will find it hard. Sakkari, on the other hand, is extremely motivated to make it far in another Grand Slam and show us all that she is one of the future best tennis players in the world. I’ll take Sakkari to win.
