South African Kevin Anderson faces the Serbian Laslo Djere in the first round at Roland Garros. The veteran is still finding his bearings after taking most of the 2019 season off due to injury. Will he be able to overcome the challenge from the in-form Djere?
Anderson has suffered some severe injuries over the past two years. He missed most of the 2019 season due to elbow and knee injuries, and had knee surgery early on this year. The former top five player now sits at a lowly #118 and will be hoping to remain healthy for the remainder of the year. Despite him clearly favoring the hard courts he has had decent results on clay reaching the fourth round in Paris a number of times. He comes into Paris in poor form, having lost in the first round at the US Open, Rome and Hamburg.
Laslo Djere heads into Paris ranked #72 which is a far cry from his once top-30 ranking, but he will very confident after his run in Kitzbuhel last week. He claimed major scalps such as Sinner and Schwartzman upon reaching the semis. He has a good clay court pedigree, winning an ATP-500 title on the surface in Rio last year. He is extremely solid from the baseline and once he can keep his serve in check (he can be erratic at times in this area) he will surely like his chances to win this match.
Despite Anderson being a former top five player and two time Grand Slam finalist I am going to pick Djere to win this match. He has had more success on the surface than the South African and also comes into Paris in much better form. If Anderson is serving well he could keep the sets close and could possibly sneak one but I expect that Djere will eventually pull away and win this match. Laslo Djere to win.
