16th seeded Stan Wawrinka faces German Dominik Koepfer in the first round of the 2020 French Open. This has all the makings of an intriguing match with both players seemingly in good form heading into this week's Grand Slam event.
Stan Wawrinka is one of the most accomplished players on tour and boasts a great record on clay and in Paris, winning the title in 2015. Even though he in the twilight of his career, he is still capable of some great tennis and can beat any player on his day. He produced some outstanding tennis to defeat former world number one Andy Murray in the first round in three convincing sets. He opted to skip the US Open and played three warm up clay events, winning one challenger and surprisingly losing in the first round to Italian phenom Musetti in the first round in Rome. His serve and backhand are still elite in today's game and he will have to play a solid match to overcome the German who is also in great form.
After losing in the qualifying rounds in Kitzbuhel, Koepfer has had some great results on clay. He reached the quarterfinals in Rome where he narrowly lost to Novak Djokovic in three sets. Along the way he had impressive wins over Gael Monfils and Alex De Minaur. In Hamburg he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets, showing the high level of tennis that he is capable of.
This is a tricky second round encounter but I am going to pick Stan Wawrinka to win this match. While the German is in solid form, he has never had great results at a Grand Slam and it would be a surprise if he is able to defeat the former world number three, especially on his favorite surface where he has won seven titles including the French Open and the ATP-1000 event in Monte-Carlo. I don't expect this to be an easy match but Wawrinka is too experienced to lose early on here in Paris. Koepfer is good enough to take a set, possibly the first as Stan can be a slow starter but that is all he can hope for. Stan the Man to win.
