Number one seed Simona Halep of Romania faces her compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu in the Second Round of the 2020 French Open. Will Begu be able to spring the huge upset and defeat this year's favorite for the title? Only time will tell.
Simona Halep is considered by many to be the frontrunner for this year's French Open Title. She has been one of the top clay court players for many years, winning the title here in 2018. She comes into Paris in supreme form, having won titles in both Prague and Rome. She is always considered a favorite in every tournament she plays but when she is in this type of form, she will definitely be feeling very good about her chances. Halep beat Begu in Prague and leads the head to head 7-0. She was in imperious form in her first round win over Sorribes Tormo, only losing four games in the process.
Fellow Romanian Begu had an impressive first round win over Jil Teichmann but facing Halep will be a whole other ball game. She has never beaten her countrywoman and will surely be feeling pessimistic about her chances of advancing here. She is solid on both sides but it remains to be seen if she can penetrate Halep's rock-solid defence. Begu is talented enough to cause a few problems but unfortunately her chances rest solely on how Halep plays. If the red-hot favorite for the title is playing well, there is little she can do to stop her.
Simona Halep will win this match, and it will be a huge shock otherwise. She is simply a much better player than her opponent and should take care of business rather quickly. She is prone to slow starts and Begu did take her to a tiebreak in Prague but I don't see that happening here. Halep will be relishing being the favorite and this should be over quickly. Halep to win in straight sets.
