Number 7 seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy faces South African Lloyd Harris in the second round of the 2020 French Open. Both players had comfortable straight set wins in the opening round against good opponents and will be looking to extend their stay in Paris. Does Harris have what it takes to pull off the upset?
Matteo Berrettini is one of the most exciting young players in the game today, and has shot up the rankings very quickly. He is very versatile, comfortable on both hard and clay courts. He comes into Roland Garros in top form, narrowly losing to Casper Ruud in the Italian Open quarterfinals. He possesses major weapons in his serve and forehand but an underrated aspect of his game is how well he moves. He will be looking to play to his strengths as he always does and dictate play from the start.
Lloyd Harris is not known for his clay court play but he has looked very solid on the surface recently. He has had a very good year, reaching his maiden ATP final in Auckland. He backed up a strong run to the semis in an Italian Challenger with a dominant display over Alexi Popyrin in the first round and will be looking to continue the good form. However he is much more at home on hard courts and it remains to be seen if he is ready to show that he can compete on all surface.
This match should be over fairly quickly, with Matteo Berrettini coming out on top. He is a top 10 player for a reason and is right at home on the clay courts. He will simply be too much for Harris to handle, and will overpower him with his aggressive style of play. It would be a surprise if the South African is able to win a set here. Berrettini to win in straight sets is the prediction.
