World Number 11 Petra Kvitova faces the Italian Jasmine Paolini in the second round at Roland Garros 2020. This looks like an easy match on paper but will the young Italian be able to push the two-time Grand Slam winner?
Petra Kvitova enters Paris without any clay court tournaments under her belt this season. It begs the question if she is fully prepared for this tournament, especially on her least favorite surface. She is no slouch on clay though, having had some success on the surface during her career, reaching the French Open semifinals on one occasion. She is a perennial top 10 player and they are hard to beat in big tournaments like this. She will look to use her huge serve and groundstrokes to have her opponent on the back foot from early.
Jasmine Paolini had an impressive win over Stefanie Voegle in the opening round. She will have to play her best tennis to have a chance of causing the upset. She is a very solid player from the baseline and is a great returner, but her serve is a cause for concern. She is very comfortable on the clay courts, having recently caused top players such as Simona Halep and Elise Mertens some major trouble. She is very consistent and this could cause Kvitova to become impatient and overhit the ball. She is also capable of mixing it up well which could work in her favour. If she can reduce the errors on her serve and play a bit more attacking than usual I think that this match could be very interesting.
Even though Jasmine Paolini is very talented and dangerous on this surface, I am going to pick the Czech star to win this match. There is a huge gap in experience between the two and this is a major factor at big tournaments such as this. Paolini certainly has the game to trouble Kvitova but she has never been to this stage of a Grand Slam before, and nerves will definitely be a cause for concern. The only reason I am not predicting a comfortable win for Kvitova is her lack of preparation for this tournament but she should still be able to pull it off. Kvitova to win.
