World Number 11 Petra Kvitova faces number 100th ranked Leylah Fernandez of Canada in the third round of the 2020 French Open. This is a classic match between youth and experience and it should be an exciting contest. Kvitova has been one of the top players in the world for many years, and Fernandez is one of the most talented youngsters in the game today.
Before the French Open started, Petra Kvitova was probably not considered a true contender for the crown. She has reached the third round without dropping a set and will definitely be liking her chances of advancing deep into the tournament. She is well known as a top hard and grass court player but has had some decent success on clay, reaching the semifinals in 2012. The two time Grand Slam Champion has a booming serve and strong groundstrokes and will be looking to start strongly, dominating her younger opponent.
Leylah Fernandez is still relatively inexperienced at this level. This is only her third Grand Slam event and she has done well to reach the third round here. She is no stranger to Roland Garros, having won the junior title last year and has shown that she has the game to compete with the world's best. She has had an impressive start here in Paris, defeating #31 seed Magda Linette and the talented Polona Hercog en route to the third round. She will be full of confidence heading into this match and will not back down from the huge challenge that she faces in Kvitova.
This should be a fun match to watch and it has the potential to go all the way. Kvitova is obviously the more accomplished player but teenage sensation Fernandez will surely be in the top 10 within a few years and definitely has the game to make this close. With that being said, I am predicting Petra Kvitova to win this match. She can be a slow starter at times and I wouldn't be surprised if the Canadian won the first set, but I expect Kvitova to draw from her vast experience and eventually grind out a hard fought win. Petra Kvitova to win a close match.
