5th seeded Dutchwoman Kiki Bertans faces qualifier Martina Trevisan of Italy in the fourth round of the 2020 French Open Championships. This seems to be a relatively straightforward match on paper but there have been a number of upsets already this year. Does the Italian have what it takes to cause another one?
Kiki Bertans had shaky wins in her opening two matches, being surprisingly pushed to three sets in both. Major concerns were raised about her fitness in the second round against Errani, having to leave the court in a wheelchair after cramping badly. She returned to dominant ways in the third round, dominating the talented Siniakova 6-2, 6-2 so she seems to be approaching top form. She is an extremely dangerous clay court player, considered to be one of the top players on that surface. She is an extremely consistent player and is very hard to beat when she is in top form. She has had success here before, being a former semifinalist. I still have concerns about her fitness but if she is healthy she enters this match as the overwhelming favorite.
The Italian has been a surprise package at this year's French Open. She was impressive in qualifying but has since scored major upsets over Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari, so she has proven that she does not shy away from challenges and is not phased by the big stage. However she is facing the highest ranked opponent of her career, and one with a higher clay court pedigree than the other opponents. The left-hander has no major weapons and is content to just sit back and hope for her opponent to miss. This tactic may have worked before but I don't expect it to happen to the highly experienced Bertens. Trevisan will have to be more aggressive to have a chance in my opinion.
Despite the many upsets at this year's French Open and the Italian's giant-killing form I am going to pick Bertens to win this match. After a tough few weeks losing early in Rome and Strasbourg she seems to have found some form and confidence at the right time and I expect her to win this match. There is still a bit of rust but she has enough experience to overcome whatever Trevisan throws at her. It has been a very impressive tournament for the Italian but it will end here. Kiki Bertens to win.
