Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan faces the American Mackenzie McDonald in the First Round of the St. Petersburg Open in Russia. Bublik is ranked #49 and McDonald #236 so on paper it is a mismatch, but will the American underdog be able to pull off the upset?
Alexander Bublik has been having a fairly good year. He has a 14-14 record on the year but he is 7-3 on indoor hard courts, including a Semi-Final run in Marseille. He competed in this event in 2019, losing in the First Round to Norwegian Casper Ruud. He is known as a supremely talented yet inconsistent player as evidenced by his win over Gael Monfils in Paris, followed by a tame loss to unfancied Lorenzo Sonego in the Second Round. He has a huge game with explosive shots from all over but loses focus very easily. It will be interesting to see which version of Alexander Bublik we see in St. Petersburg.
His opponent Mackenzie McDonald is known as an unfulfilled talent. He showed a lot of promise early in his career but has not lived up to expectations, languishing outside the top 200 for most of his career. On his day he is still capable of good tennis but has shown a lot of inconsistency. It is unlikely that he will be able to withstand the powerful game that his opponent possesses. He is a very solid player but lacks the consistency needed to bother a top 40 player.
Alexander Bublik is going to win this match relatively easily. He struggles to focus for long stretches but I don't think that Mackenzie McDonald is at the level to punish him if he has concentration lapses. Bublik is simply the better player and will move into the Second Round here in Russia with relative ease.
