Andrey Rublev of Russia faces Canadian Vasek Pospisil in what is sure to be a very exciting encounter in the First Round of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open in Russia. The match will take place on Monday October 12th, 2020. The two players have played each other twice before, splitting the matches with one win each with both matches coming on hard courts. This match will be played on an indoor hard court.
Andrey Rublev has been having a fantastic year in 2020, and will be eager to put on a show in his home tournament. He is currently ranked a career high world #12 and is expected to soon break into the top 10. In the past few weeks he reached the Quarterfinals at both the US Open and French Open, as well as winning the title in Hamburg so he will be one of the favorites to win the tournament here. He will also be highly motivated to perform here as the race for the Nitto ATP Finals is coming down to the wire and he is in contention for a spot.
Vasek Pospisil started the year off very well but has since slowed down a bit. He had a disappointing clay court season but is always a dangerous player, capable of troubling even the very top players in the world. He will be happy to be back on the harder courts and if things are going his way he could potentially make this match very interesting with his big serve and groundstrokes sure to make Rublev think.
I am going to pick Andrey Rublev to win this match. He is one of the best players in the world at the moment and is simply too good for the Canadian at this point in time. It is sometimes difficult to predict the outcome in ATP 250 and 500 matches as you are never sure what the players motivation levels will be like but the fact that the Russian is in with a chance to qualify for the ATP finals makes me confident in this selection. Andrey Rublev to win and advance to the second round here in Russia.
