Fifth Seeded Swiss player Stan Wawrinka faces British Number One Dan Evans in an intriguing First Round clash at the St. Petersburg Open in Russia. The match will be played on Monday October 12th, 2020. Wawrinka leads the head to head 3-0 and will be looking to extend that streak here in Russia. Does Evans have what it takes to register his first win over the three-time Grand Slam Champion?
The Swiss superstar has been having a poor season by his lofty standards and is coming off a disappointing clay court swing, on a surface many consider to be his best. He was stunned in Rome by the young phenom Lorenzo Musetti, and was defeated in the Third Round at Roland Garros by another prospect in France's Hugo Gaston. He will be looking to get back to his winning ways here in Russia but faces Evans who is a tricky opponent. Stan will be looking to use his power advantage to hit through Evans and will be attacking from the beginning. His big serve and even bigger groundstrokes can still be too much for even the top players to handle, even at age 35.
Luckily for Stan, his opponent is in even worse form than he is at the moment. The Brit has lost in the opening round in his last three tournaments and will be looking to stop the slide here. Evans uses more of a counter-punching style and can be especially tricky as he is very good at using a lot of variation to unsettle his opponent. Evans possesses one of the top backhand slices in my opinion and this can pose problems for many players. Evans has a knack of drawing mistakes out of players and will have to do more of the same here to have any chance at a victory.
From a betting standpoint this match should probably be avoided. Stan Wawrinka is the favorite here but his opponent's style of play will be very tricky for him to overcome in the poor form that he is in. Stan leads the head to head 3-0 but was in much better shape during those victories, and they were close. If I had to pick one I would go with the Swiss 5th seed but I expect a very close match. Stan Wawrinka to win in three sets.
