Sixth Seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland faces German Mischa Zverev in a Round of 16 clash at the 2020 Cologne Open. This match will take place on Wednesday October 14th, 2020. The less heralded of the Zverev siblings had an impressive win in the First Round but does he have what it takes to upset the World Number 31?
Mischa Zverev was outstanding in his surprising First Round win over Australian John Millman. After a poor past few years his ranking has tumbled to #268 which is a far cry from his career-high top 25 ranking and he needed a wildcard to enter this event. However he has certainly taken advantage of his good fortune and will be looking to kick start his career with two good weeks here in Cologne. He still employs a perhaps outdated serve and volley game, rushing into the net at every opportunity. He will be looking to use the same tactic here to unsettle the tall Pole.
Hubert Hurkacz has been considered one of the most promising young players on the ATP Tour for the past few years. After an outstanding 2019 season he has come back down to earth a bit, with some inconsistent performances this season. He has a very powerful game and the slow indoor hard courts seem to suit his game. He was impressive in his straight sets First Round victory over Marc Polmans and will be looking to turn his poor season around with a deep run here. I expect him to be bothered by the constant net-rushing but should adjust quickly and eventually be too much for the German to handle.
Hubert Hurkacz will win this match. While the net-rushing Zverev will surely unsettle him with his unique lefty game, Hurkacz is still a quality player and should have no problem dispatching the German veteran. Zverev's game has rapidly declined over the past few years and while he was impressive in the First Round, there is nothing to suggest that he still has the quality to cause the upset here. Hubert Hurkacz to win and advance to the Second Round here in Cologne.
