Denis Shapovalov meets veteran Viktor Troicki in the first round of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open. This is going to be a very tight encounter between two tough opponents, but will Troicki be able to cause a shocking upset?
Viktor Troicki has not played much on the tour in recent years and will be very rusty coming into this match. Troicki used to be one of the best players in the world and in his prime he could beat Shapovalov with ease. However, nowadays this is not the case anymore. Troicki is more of an exhibition player or a Davis Cup player rather than an ATP Tour player. Troicki will have to be on top of his game if he is to stand a chance here in this match and even win a set. Troicki will find it hard, but this is tennis and we never know what is going to happen out there on the court.
Denis Shapovalov will want to bounce back after a tough 5 hour 5-set loss at the French Open against Roberto Carballes Baena where the Canadian served for the match twice in the final set. Shapovalov loves these indoor hard courts and he will definitely be happy that this is going to be the rest of the tournaments for the season. Shapovalov will come out here determined to go far and get some points under his belt to get back into the top 10 in the world after he was only there for a couple of weeks.
This is going to be the third meeting between both players, with the head to head standing at 1-1. Troicki was better when he won against Shapovalov, however, nowadays he is nowhere near this level. Shapovalov is the much better player at the moment and he will definitely be in complete control of this match from the get go. I expect this to be a straight sets easy victory for the Canadian and this is going to be the best way for him to bounce back after that tough loss in Paris. Shapovalov in straight sets.
