Stan Wawrinka meets local Evgeny Donskoy in the second round of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open. Will Donskoy be able to pull a shocking upset here, or will Wawrinka put on another solid performances as he did on Monday when these two meet on Wednesday, October 14th 2020?
Aslan Karatsev put on a solid performance against Egor Gerasimov on Monday, beating the Armenian in straight sets. Donskoy was playing a player who has more experience in the tour and especially in this tournament. However, Donskoy was able to use the crowd to gain some momentum and confidence, eventually allowing him to take advantage of Egor Gerasimov's mistakes and run away with the match. Donskoy will now have to put on a performance of a lifetime if he is to stand a chance here against his next opponent and player ranked much higher than him, Stan Wawrinka.
Stan Wawrinka was able to stick in his incredibly tight encounter with Daniel Evans to eventually win the match in 3 sets. Wawrinka looked the worse player for the first two sets, however, he was able to save match point in the second set and eventually win the third set 7-5. Wawrinka has shown us he is a bit wobbly in form as of recent and in order for me to be fully confident in him, I will need to see more consistency in his game. However, these are indoor hard courts and Stan the Man loves these high speed conditions.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players and this is only going to finish one way. Stan Wawrinka is the much better player, has the better overall game, and has much more experience. Donskoy struggled at some points against Gerasimov, and against Wawrinka he will have to be on top of his game at all times if he is even to steal a set here. I expect Wawrinka to get the job done here in easier fashion, and he will probably win this match in straight sets to book his spot in the quarterfinals.
