Eighth Seeded Marin Cilic of Crotia faces Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a Round of 16 match at the 2020 Cologne Open / BettHulks1 Indoor Open. This match is between a rising star and a declining one. Will the young Spaniard continue his rise up the rankings and be able to upset the veteran?
Marin Cilic has been a top player for many years but his form has been declining recently. He certainly is not the player he once was but can be a dangerous opponent on his day. He still possesses a huge serve which got him out of trouble quite often in the previous round, saving 15 out of 18 break points that his opponent Marcos Giron forced. Despite his huge game he has only had inconsistent results on the indoor hard surface, winning one title in 2015 but struggling otherwise. His big serve and powerful groundstrokes are still weapons but they are not as sharp as they once were. He is still a former Grand Slam Champion and world number 3 so he cannot be underestimated.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a young prospect who is rapidly moving up the rankings. He has had a good year in 2020, reaching a career high ranking of 69. He had a good win over Emil Ruusuvuori in the previous round and will be full of confidence here. He boasts a very explosive forehand and is well-known for his love of drop shots, which could cause the lanky Croat some issues. He varies his game very well and can be unsettling to his opponents.
I expect this to be a very close match. Cilic while not the force he once was is still a very good player, with one of the best serves on tour. However I have serious concerns about his fitness and he will be fatigued after a marathon first round match. His serve will keep things close but I think that the Spaniard has what it takes to grind out a win here. It really can go either way but I am siding with the young gun here. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win.
