Casper Ruud meets Yannick Hanfmann in the second round of the 2020 Sardinia Open on Thursday, October 15th 2020. Will Hanfmann be able to cause any sort of upset here, or will the up and coming Ruud take this match in his hands and cruise through to the quarterfinals?
Yannick Hanfmann put on a solid performance against Salvatore Caruso in the first round, beating the Italian 6-0/6-4. Hanfmann has had some solid wins under his belt in the last month or so, beating the likes of Gael Monfils in straight sets at the 2020 Hamburg Open. Hanfmann, however, will now face an extremely tough opponent, especially on clay, Casper Ruud. If Hanfmann is to even stand a chance here, he is going to have to play levels above how he played on Wednesday and he will have to ensure he can maintain that level for a few hours on court.
Casper Ruud has been extremely solid all clay court season this year, reaching the semifinals of the 2020 Rome Open and nearly stealing a set off of Novak Djokovic. Ruud is an up and coming talent and he is surely going to be in the world's top 10 one day with his incredible game, however, he is still young and has a lot to develop in his game. Ruud will come out here and want to win the title, a feat he is more than capable of achieving. Ruud knows that if he plays his best tennis, nearly no-one here can stop him.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players and in my opinion it is not going to be a contest. Ruud is so much better than Hanfmann, especially on clay and he is my favourite to win the title here in Sardinia. Ruud possesses a Nadal-esque game and has the brute strength to outpower and outlast his opponents. Hanfmann will have to be on top of his game, and be able to play for extremely long and draining rallies. I don't believe Hanfmann can do this and I believe Ruud will outplay his opponent here.
