Young phenom Lorenzo Musetti of Italy faces his compatriot Andrea Pellegrino in the Second Round of the 2020 Sardinia Open. The match will take place on Thursday October 15th at 5:20am EST. Musetti burst onto the scene at the Italian Open in Rome a few weeks ago, will he have another deep run here in Sardinia? His opponent will surely have something to say about that, leading the head to head 2-0 with both matches being played on clay in 2019.
The newest Italian superstar turned heads in the ATP-1000 event in Rome, defeating Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori en route to the Round of 16. He followed it up by winning a Challenger Event on clay immediately after. The youngster has a huge game and can only improve from here. He is solid from both sides, especially his beautiful one handed backhand but what is most impressive is his fighting spirit. He does not back down from a challenge and proved that Rome was no fluke by defeating Pablo Cuevas in the First Round this week.
His opponent, Pellegrino is not as well known as the younger Musetti but he will like his chances of winning here. He has won both of their previous matches on the surface and scored an impressive comeback win over Stefano Travaglia to reach this stage. He has an impressive 12-4 Challenger record this year on clay and will be a stern test for the youngster with his solid all court game. However his lack of weapons will be a concern now that Musetti has had some ATP Tour level experience under his belt.
Although he has never beaten his opponent previously, I expect that this result will be different and Musetti will get the victory here. He has matured by leaps and bounds over the past few months and has proven that is the real deal. He is brimming with confidence after the outstanding breakthrough year that he has had and should win this match. Pellegrino is good enough to keep it tight, and given that he has two previous wins I am expecting this to go the distance. Lorenzo Musetti to win a close contest.
