Egor Gerasimov of Belarus faces German Daniel Altmaier in the First Round of the 2020 Cologne Championships / Bett1Hulk Championships. The match will take place on Monday October 19th, 2020. Will the Belarussian or the local youngster advance to the Round of 16?
Egor Gerasimov is ranked #85 in the world and is a solid baseline player. He has been in poor form since the restart, having lost in either the First Round or Qualifying in every single event he has played other than a Second Round showing at the US Open. He is better than his form suggests and he will be hoping to finish the year on a positive note with a good week here. He is solid from the baseline and is not afraid to rush the net, a tactic that may be effective against Altmaier who can be a bit streaky.
Daniel Altmaier is a very promising young player who burst onto the scene earlier this year with some impressive wins at the French Open, upsetting top players such as Feliciano Lopez, Jan-Lennard Struff and Matteo Berrettini. He has a strong serve and very attacking groundstrokes. His best results have come on clay courts and he lost in the Opening Round last week here in Cologne so it remains to be seen if he will be able to compete on these slow indoor hard courts.
I predict that Egor Gerasimov will win this match. Altmaier is definitely one for the future and has tons of potential but Gerasimov has more experience at this level and is too consistent for the young German in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if Altmaier won here but the smart money is on Gerasimov to advance.
