Local player Jan-Lennard Struff faces Marco Cecchinato of Italy in an intriguing First Round match at the 2020 Cologne Championships. The match will be played on Wednesday October 21st, 2020. The players have played four times before and are deadlocked at 2-2. Who will advance?
Jan-Lennard Struff is currently ranked #32 and has been in poor form lately. He will be hoping to get his year back on track with a good showing this week at home in Germany. He surprisingly lost to Oscar Otte in the First Round here last week and will be looking to improve on that result this week. He has a powerful serve and groundstrokes but can be very erratic at times, especially against consistent baseliners like Cecchinato.
Marco Cecchinato was ranked as high as 16 a few years ago but a spectacular loss of form saw his ranking drop out of the top 100. He has had a resurgence of late, reaching the Final or the 2020 Sardinia Open where he was beated by Laslo Djere. He is extremely solid from the baseline but this surface will do him no favors as he prefers the slower clay courts. He is still a very dangerous opponent however and when he is in form he can be very difficult to beat. He will be hoping that his consistent game draws a lot of errors out of his opponent as he does not have the weapons on this type of surface to be able to hit through him.
I am going to pick Jan-Lennard Struff to win this match. Cecchinato is in better form than the German at the moment but these courts suit Struff's game more, and he will be eager to put in a strong showing at home. Once he is playing confidently and not going for too much he should be able to overpower the Italian easily and win this match. Jan-Lennard Struff to win and advance to the Round of 16 here in Cologne.
