Young Canadian superstar Felix Auger-Aliassime faces Egor Gerasimov of Belarus in a Round of 16 encounter at the 2020 Cologne Championships. The match will take place on Wednesday October 21st, 2020. The Canadian number 3 seed leads the head to head by 2 wins to 0 and will be looking to advance to the Quarterfinals. Does Gerasimov have the ability to cause the upset?
Felix Auger-Aliassime is only 20 years old but has been touted as the future of men's tennis since the young age of 16. He has had a good career so far but has largely failed to live up to those lofty expectations as many predicted he would be a top 5 player by now. He is still in search of his first ATP title and narrowly missed out last week, losing in the final of the Cologne Open to Alexander Zverev. He will be confident of making amends and winning the title here. He has huge groundstrokes and a good serve, and can dominate even the best of opponents from the baseline. When he is focused he is surely one of the best players in the world and will only improve from here.
Egor Gerasimov was very impressive in the opening round, trouncing homegrown hero Daniel Altmaier for the loss of only 1 game. He will look to keep that incredible form going but faces the sternest of tests in the young Canadian. He is ranked #87 and has a decent hard court record. He is one of those players that is very good from the baseline but without any major weapons which can be a recipe for disaster against a top player. His best bet is to stay as consistent as possible and stick in the rallies, attempting to frustrate the youngster into making careless errors. He will have to play incredible defence to withstand the barrage of huge groundstrokes that are surely coming his way.
FAA will win this match and is a serious contender for the title here. In my opinion he was the most outstanding player in Cologne last week and was unlucky to fall at the final hurdle. Expect him to cruise to victory here.
