Dan Evans of Great Britain faces qualifier Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia in the First Round of the 2020 Vienna Open in Austria. The pair have played twice before, winning one match each. Who will advance to the Round of 16?
Dan Evans is ranked #33 in the world and is in good form at the moment. He is fresh from making the Semi-Finals in Antwerp, where he had impressive wins over Karen Khachanov(saving match point) and Frances Tiafoe. He will be full of confidence and expecting to do well in this match. He is a tricky player to face and one that is able to mix his game up very well, using crafty slices and changes of pace to unsettle his opponents. It will be interesting to see if he is feeling the effects of a long week in Antwerp including a three hour Semi-Final loss to Ugo Humbert. Fatigue can definitely be a factor here.
Aljaz Bedene was in good form during the qualifying rounds and will be confident after his impressive results since the ATP Tour resumed, with wins over Cristian Garin and Taylor Fritz. He had a solid win over Lorenzo Sonego in the final round and is seemingly very comfortable on these courts. This is one of his favorite tournaments, having reached the Quarter-Finals in Vienna twice in his career. He will be hoping for a repeat performance but faces a tricky and in-form opponent in Evans. He seemed to be struggling with an injury during the St. Petersburg tournament so that is something to monitor.
I am going with Dan Evans to win this match. He performed very well in Antwerp and is playing with a lot of confidence. As long as he is not very fatigued from his successful run last week he should have enough quality to defeat the lower-ranked Slovenian. Dan Evans to win and advance to the Round of 16.
