The first tournament of the year is here and we have an All-American encounter here in the first round as young star MacKenzie McDonald meets veteran of the game, Sam Querrey, on Thursday January 7th 2020. Will it be youth or experience that prevails here in Delray Beach?

MacKenzie McDonald has not been at his best over the last few years, compared to his game in 2017/18 when everyone viewed him as the prodigy of American tennis. However, injuries and inconsistency has led to McDonald mainly focusing on the challenger level tournaments and small ATP 250s. The only time I remember seeing him play last year was during the French Open where he got absolutely destroyed by Rafael Nadal and never stood a chance of taking any set even to a tiebreak. McDonald knows his career has not gone how he would've hoped for, but this is a new year and he can definitely get back on track.

Sam Querrey is a very experienced tennis player, especially when it comes to the American-circuit tournaments. Querrey enjoys the US playing conditions and is known for being solid on hard courts. Querrey is very tall and has one of the best serves in the game when he is confident. The last time Querrey played a top level match was also at the French Open in the first round against Andrey Rublev. Querrey will have nightmares about that match as he was 2-0 sets up and 5-3 serving for the match, and then ended up losing it in 5 sets. Querrey will have definitely taken this tennis break to get his body and his head back in the right state of mind to come back this year and give it his best shot.

This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and although McDonald is younger and might have a bit more energy in his legs, I think Sam Querrey comes out on top here. Querrey has a bigger game and has more power behind all of his shots. Querrey also has more experience and has taken this time off to get his body in shape and ready to win matches in competitions. Querrey to win.
