It is the battle of the Americans as veteran, John Isner, meets prodigy, Sebastian Korda, in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Delray Beach Open on Monday, January 11th 2021. Will it be the experienced or the young generations to come through here on Monday?
John Isner has been very solid here at the Delray Beach Open, winning his two matches with relative ease here, especially in the second round against Thiago Monteiro where we won 6-4/7-6. Isner is getting towards the latter end of his career nowadays, and he relies on his serve as much as possible, however, when he plays in the US, he always steps up his game a bit as the home crowd helps rally him. Isner will want to prove something in this match by showing the young generation of US tennis players that he is still the top dog and he will not go away without a fight.
Sebastian Korda has been stunning here in Delray Beach, coming through in spectacular form, especially in his second round match against fellow American, Tommy Paul, in which he won in 3 sets, coming back from a set down. Korda moves beautifully around the court, and he aims to play a bit like his idol, Rafael Nadal. I believe that Korda wants to have his breakthrough season this year, and if he continues to play like this and potentially improves, he will go a long way. Will Sebastian Korda have enough to beat one of the best US players in the last 2 decades in John Isner though?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Sebastian Korda leading the head to head 1-0. They met last year at the French Open, where Korda won in 4 sets 6-4/6-4/2-6/6-4. I think that this was obviously more suited for Korda as it was on clay, which is one of his favourite surface. I think Isner is not a great mover around the court anymore, whilst Korda is incredibly rapid, which means that he will struggle against the young American if his serve is not inch perfect. I think it will be tight, but Korda should make his first ATP Semi-Final by beating John Isner.
