Fourth seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus faces Russian Veronika Kudermetova in the final of the first WTA tournament of the year, the 2021 Abu Dhabi Open. The match will take place on Wednesday January 13th, 2021 at approximately 4:00am EST. Sabalenka leads the head to head by 1 match to 0, but that was over 5 years ago. Who will win to claim the first title of the year?
Aryna Sabalenka is one of the most in form players on the WTA Tour. She is bidding for her third title in a row, having ended the year with titles in Ostrava and Linz. She has been in outstanding form this week in Dubai, winning every match but one very comfortably. She was pushed to three sets against Elena Rybakina but that was more a case of her taking the foot off the gas for a period, and while it was three sets she never seemed in true danger of losing. Her serve has been outstanding and she has been clinical from the baseline, dominating her opponents with her powerful game. She enters this final as a huge favourite and should be considered a contender for the Australian Open in this current form.
Veronika Kudermetova is in unfamiliar territory here, having never reached a WTA Final before. She has lost 4 times at the Semi-Final stage and will be thrilled too have reached her first Final. She too has been outstanding this week in Dubai, with a huge upset win over Elina Svitolina before beating the teenage phenom Marta Kostyuk in the Semis. She displayed very mature tennis in that match, breaking her opponent 5 times en route to victory. She enters this match as a huge underdog due to her opponent's form but will be very confident in her chances here.
This match should be a straightforward win for Aryna Sabalenka. She is in incredible form and it will take a titanic effort from the Russian to even stand a chance. Sabalenka is simply better in each facet of the game and should cruise to her third consecutive WTA Title. Aryna Sabalenka to win in straight sets.
