The 2021 Murray River Open (Melbourne 2) begins on Sunday January 31st, 2021 and is one of the main lead-up tournaments to the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open. It is an ATP 250 event, featuring many of the world's top players (that are not involved in the ATP Cup). Borna Gojo of Croatia faces local favorite Alexei Popyrin in a First Round clash. They have never played each other before. Will Popyrin get the victory in his home country?

Alexei Popyrin has long been considered a rising star of Australian Tennis, showing immense talent and promise since he was very young. He has had some decent results, but has thus far failed to live up to the high expectations that have been placed on his shoulders. Currently ranked #114, he will be seeking a good start to the year as he attempts to re-enter the world top 100. With a huge serve and forehand he has some serious weapons at his disposal but has lacked consistency throughout his career. He has had some big wins but struggles to string wins together, a trend he will be hoping to stop this year.

Borna Gojo is a relative unknown on the ATP Tour. Mainly playing on the ITF and Challenger circuits where he has decent success, he had a good run at the Australian Open Qualifying tournament in Doha earlier this year, narrowly losing in the final round to Henri Laaksonen in a third set tiebreaker. Currently ranked #223, the 22 year old is a solid baseline player who is seeking to make a name for himself. He has very little experience at this level besides a few Davis Cup ties so no doubt there will be some nerves involved.

Despite his inconsistent career so far, Alexei Popyrin is a very talented player and it is hard to see him losing this match at home to a less experienced player to him. Popyrin will be excited by the chance to play in front of his home crowd and this is the ideal matchup for him to start with and build some momentum. Popyrin to win.
