Andrew Harris of Australia faces Taro Daniel of Japan in the First Round of the 2021 Murray River Open in Melbourne, Australia. The match will be played on Sunday January 31st, 2021 at a time yet to be determined. The two players have never played each other and will be seeking to get their seasons off to a strong start. Who will win?
Taro Daniel is currently ranked #117 but has been as high as #64 in the ATP rankings. He has struggled for form over the past few years and will be hoping to regain his place in the top 100. Holder of one ATP title, he is considered a very talented player but an erratic one. He had a strong finish to the 2020 season winning the Hamburg Challenger and was impressive in the Australian Open Qualifying in Doha earlier this month before falling in the Final Round to Elias Ymer. He is a solid player but lacks a true weapon and can struggle with his serve at times.
Andrew Harris is 26 years old and is currently ranked 232. He received a Wild Card into this event and is hoping to take advantage of that. He is a prototypical hardworking Aussie player who is solid on both sides. He has a much stronger serve than Daniel and will be hoping to end the points quickly, as long rallies will favor his higher ranked opponent. He is comfortable on hard courts with two ITF titles to his name. Harris struggled for form towards the end of the 2020 season on the Challenger Tour and will be hoping to turn his fortunes around with an upset win here.
While Taro Daniel is known as an inconsistent player he is still a level above his opponent Andrew Harris here and even if he is not quite at his best he should still be good enough to get the victory here. Harris has the "home court advantage" but Daniel is a former top 65 player and has a few matches under his belt this year already so should be in good form. Taro Daniel to win.
