The start of the WTA Tour Australian swing is here as we open the WTA Yarra Valley Classic. In the first round we see a fair few interesting matches on our hands as we head into the second round where we will see the likes of Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, and many more. In the first round we have an extremely tight and exciting matchup as Fiona Ferro meets Shelby Rogers on Sunday, January 31st 2021.
Fiona Ferro did not really stand out as she should have done in 2020, however, this should not discount her incredible game and the fact that she has already won a title this year in the first tournament of the year. Ferro is extremely passionate, young, and has a bright future ahead of her. It will be interesting to see if she can ride the momentum from her title victory already this year and perhaps be a dark horse in this tournament.
Shelby Rogers had a very solid 2020 season, reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open, where she was knocked out by the eventual champion, Naomi Osaka. Rogers is a bulldog when on the court, she will always give it her all, fight for every ball, and give you something to worry about if you take her too lightly. Rogers knows that if her fitness is up to speed, she can cause upsets against tough opponents, and it will be very interesting to see where her game is at here at the start of the 2021 Australian tennis swing.
This is the second time these two have met, with Shelby Rogers leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2019, where Rogers won their match in 3 sets. Ferro, although she won her first title of the season in the last few weeks, might be still riding that high and not fully focused on going back-to-back in title victories. On the other hand, Shelby will he incredibly determined to get her season started off on a positive note, and she will put everything on the line to make it to the second round here. Shelby Rogers to win.
