Jordan Thompson looks to begin his tennis season down under in Australia here at the 2021 Great Ocean Road Open as he meets Gianluca Mager in the first round. Will Thompson perform strongly infront of his home fans, or will we see an upset in the first round here?
Jordan Thompson is an underrated player on the ATP Tour, especially when looking at the Australian talent out there. Thompson can play extremely well from the baseline and he moves extremely quickly around the court. Thompson will have gotten some strong preparation under his belt here in Australia, especially as he has not had to quarantine for 14-days as he is resident in the country and did not leave the country. Thompson wants to have a strong season in 2021, and I am sure he will come out firing in the first round. Will Thompson be able to gather some momentum behind him before the start of the Australian Open?
Gianluca Mager has gotten some strong preparation before the start of this tournament, especially a few weeks ago when he competed at the 2021 Delray Beach Open, and reached the quarterfinals there. Mager is more of a clay courter, but has shown he can put on some solid performances on hard court. Mager had a great 2020 season, beating some of the best players in the world, including Dominic Thiem. Will Gianluca Mager be able to beat a home-crowd favourite here, or will he focus all his attention on the Australian Open?
This is going to be the first meeting between both players. I would expect a tight encounter, but when looking at the circumstances of Thompson not having to quarantine and being able to get some more recent training in these conditions under his belt, I believe this will allow him to win. Mager, on the other hand, has had to quarantine for the last 14-days and will not have had much practice before this tournament. Thompson will want to show his home crowd that he should be as well known as the likes of other Australians like John Millman, and a victory here in the first round will only aid his goals and succeed in 2021.
