Fifth seeded Johanna Konta of Great Britain faces unseeded American Bernarda Pera in the Second Round of the 2021 Gippsland Trophy event in Melbourne, Australia. The match will be played on Monday February 1st, 2021 at a time yet to be determined. They have played three times in the past and surprisingly Pera leads the head to head by 2 wins to 1.Will the higher ranked Konta get the win or will Pera extend her lead in the head to head standings?
After achieving her career-best ranking of number four in the world in 2017, Konta has struggled to recapture that same good form. After a good year in 2019 she had a poor 2020 season, and would likely have fallen out of the top 30 in the rankings if they did not change the rankings system due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She lost in the First Round in 5 of the tournaments she played last year and will hopefully have used the two month break to re-focus and prepare for the 2021 season. When she is on form she is very difficult so if she can regain her consistency she should be in for a bounce back year.
Bernarda Pera is currently ranked #64 and is a very talented player. She has struggled with consistency throughout her career, failing to go deep into tournaments after some good performances. She has a very solid game, not giving many points away and can be a difficult opponent to face when in form. She was almost stunned in the First Round here in Melbourne, going down a set and a break to Olivia Gadecki of Australia, who is ranked a lowly #933. She eventually regrouped to win in three sets but will need a much improved performance here if she is to get past Konta here.
Despite the gulf in their rankings, this is likely going to be a close match between two players struggling for form. I am expecting a long and sometimes ugly match, with lots of errors and momentum swings. At the end of the day I expect the more experienced Johanna Konta to come away with the victory here. Konta to win.
