Team Serbia faces Team Canada in a Group A doubles clash at the 2021 ATP Cup in Melbourne Australia. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday February 2nd, 2021. We will not know the exact doubles pairings until the singles matches have been played but as for now it is expected to be a match between Novak Djokovic/Filip Krajinovic and Denis Shapovalov/Peter Polansky. If the singles matchups play true to form then this is potentially a deciding match in the tie. Can Team Canada upset the defending champions?
Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic were the heroes of the 2020 ATP Cup, leading Team Serbia to the title along with Dusan Lajovic. If this is indeed the deciding doubles matchup and the singles are split at 1-1, expect them to play together as they have done so many times in the past. They are longtime friends and have had some success on tour before. I am sure that they both would prefer to rest and not exert themselves too much as they gear up for the Australian Open but they are always up for the challenge when it comes to representing their country. If Serbia sweeps the singles or are swept (which I think is extremely unlikely) then the pairing will likely be changed.
Similarly, if this match is a decider I expect Shapovalov and Polansky to play. If the tie is already decided then it is very likely that Polansky and Steven Diez will play to let Canada's premier players in Raonic and Shapovalov get as much rest as possible. Raonic does not play much doubles and Shapovalov/Polansky have played together up till recently so it is assumed that they are the first choice pairing. They have had some good results together in the past and Shapovalov is a strong doubles player so they are sure to put up a fight against the Serbians.
We are expecting that Djokovic and Raonic will win their respective singles matches and that the tie will come down to the doubles. I do think that Serbia has the upper hand in the doubles and they should get the all important second point. They are the more experienced team and as mentioned before won the competition last year. Serbia to win the doubles and the tie 2-1.
