Alexander Bublik looks to continue playing with the form which saw him reach the 2021 Antalya Open Final in the first tournament of the 2021 season as he enters the first round here at the Great Ocean Road Open against Christopher O’Connell. Will Bublik continue to shine, or will he revert back to his inconsistent days?
Alexander Bublik showed us something we are not used to see at the start of this year, making the final of the 2021 Altalya Open, beating the likes of Matteo Berrettini and Jeremy Chardy along the way. Bublik had to retire early in the final due to an injury, but he should not be fine and have recovered. Bublik is not known for making finals very often, with one or two every year. Bublik is a player very similar to Nick Kyrgios, when he wants to play well and win, he can beat some of the best players in the world, but he also shows some moments where you wonder if he even cares about winning. Bublik is one of the more naturally talented players on the tour and he can hit shots that other players just cannot even think possible, but will he be able to keep this momentum and will to win going at the Great Ocean Road Open, or will he revert back to the Bublik of old?
Christopher O’Connell came back from a set down against the tough Dominik Koepfer in the first round to book his spot in the second round 5-7/6-4/6-1. O’Connell showed us his incredible ability to remain in the long and draining rallies which Koepfer loves to play, and eventually he outwore Koepfer. O’Connell will want to back his performance in the second round, and give the Australian crowd something to cheer about, however, he now comes up against one of the toughest opponents in tennis, Alexander Bublik.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players. I would expect Alexander Bublik, if not still worn down by that injury a few weeks ago, to continue to play with incredible momentum. Bublik can beat anyone and everyone if he gives it his all, and it is a shame that he sometimes does not put in the effort required to fulfil his true potential, however, if he plays like he did at the Antalya Open, he should cruise into the second round here at the Great Ocean Road Open.
