Serena Williams looks to continue her superb run of form as she meets Tsvetana Pirinkova in the third round of the 2021 Yarra Valley Classic on Wednesday, February 3rd 2021. Will Williams cruise through another match, or will we see a shocking upset by Pirinkova here in the third round?
Tsvetana Pirinkova came through a tough second round match against Donna Vekic, beating the Croatian in 3 sets 1-6/6-4/6-2. Pirinkova is a fighter who gives it her all on every point, however, she will know that she is going to have to up her level drastically in this third round as she meets one of the best players of all time in Serena Williams. Will Tsvetana Pirinkova's solid movement, and determination, be able to allow her to potentially cause the upset on Wednesday, or will we see another destruction of a lesser opponent by Serena Williams?
Serena Williams absolutely destroyed Daria Gavrilova in the second round, beating the Australian in straight sets 6-1/6-4. Williams has been playing very well recently, beating Naomi Osaka at the 'A Day at the Drive' tennis exhibition, and now this solid second round performance here at the Yarra Valley Classic. Williams will want to finally reach her 24th Grand Slam next week at the Australian Open, and she will want to get as much preparation as possible here at the Yarra Valley Classic to ensure her game is up to speed with these younger, faster, and more energetic players who make the WTA Tour increasingly competitive over the last few years.
This is going to be the third meeting between both players, with the head to head tied at 1-1. Tsvetana's victory over Serena Williams was only due to a walkover at the French Open, and therefore does not really mean anything. I believe that Serena Williams will want to show the world who is still the top dog and the woman to beat in the WTA Tour. It might be a 3 set match as Tsvetana can definitely bring the fight to the 23x Grand Slam Champion, but in the end Serena Williams should make the quarterfinals here.
