It's an All-American matchup in the third round of the 2021 WTA Yarra Valley Classic on Wednesday, February 3rd 2021 as Sofia Kenin meets Jessica Pegula. Will the 2020 Australian Open Champion continue to dominate the WTA Tour in 2021, or will we see a shocking upset here in the third round?
Jessica Pegula came through two hard-fought sets in the second round against Martina Barthel, beating the German 6-4/7-5. Pegula is not very well known on the main WTA Tour, and focuses more on playing smaller tournaments which are not easily televised. Pegula, however, has shown that she can fight against some tough opponents and that we should not take her lightly when she steps on the court. Pegula will know she will have to drastically improve her level against Sofia Kenin, but I am sure she will have the confidence required to not falter too easily in this match.
Sofia Kenin came through her second round match in quick fashion, after winning the first set 7-5, Camilla Giorgi retired due to injury. Kenin will want to get some more minutes under her belt as she will feel she was not given enough time in that match to really get her self going. Kenin knows that if she plays her best tennis, she will be a title contender here alongside the favourite Ashleigh Barty. However, I am sure Kenin is looking more towards retaining her Australian Open title, and a few more solid matches under her belt will not hurt her.
This is going to be the third meeting between both players, with Jessica Pegula leading the head to head 2-0. The two victories by Jessica Pegula were many years ago, when Sofia Kenin was still developing her game. Nowadays, the tables have turned as Sofia Kenin seems to be in control of most aspects of her game and she can destroy opponents with ease when playing her best tennis. Kenin will be determined to play at least a couple more strong matches here at the Yarra Valley Classic to ensure her game if up to speed before the Australian Open, and Jessica Pegula is just another step on the way to her goal.
